Your wedding day marks the beginning of a journey quite unlike any other. So why not start this special adventure for two right here in Gozo, where the Mediterranean sea sparkles and you can definitely have your something blue. From stunning locations for the ultimate wedding photos, to ideas for the perfect honeymoon, Gozo is a destination which certainly merits to be considered if you want your big day to be sprinkled with a bit of magic.
SAY CHEESE IN PICTURE-PERFECT LOCATIONS
Over here, there’s a little custom where the bride and groom head off to a picture-perfect location before their wedding reception to take photos. There are many spots worthy of the adjective ‘picture-perfect’ in Gozo, but one of our absolute favorites for photos is the area around the Xwejni salt pans, located just an 8-minute drive away from Hotel Calypso.
The sea and unforgiving elements have eroded the honey-coloured limestone along the coast, creating undulating slopes and interesting rock formations - like the strange-looking yet iconic outcrop called il-Qolla l-Bajda, for instance - that are sure to provide the most stunning of backdrops to each and every shot. And if you’re extra lucky, you might even catch one of the fiery sunsets that casts a pink glow over the whole area, making it even more stunning!
OUR TIP: Gozo has its fair share of talented photographers - with some of them specialising in wedding photography – who are sure to capture all of the most precious moments of your day. Their services are very much in demand practically all year round, so do your reasearch and plan ahead to avoid disappointment! The Hotel Calypso team can give you a couple of recommendation to make your life even easier.
SAY YOUR I DO IN A BEAUTIFUL CHURCH
If you’re looking to exchange your vows in a church, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Gozo, where religion remains part and pacel of everyday life. Gozo’s skyline is dominated by the elegant spires and majestic domes of almost 50 churches and chapels found across the 67-square-kilometre island.
Our favourite church would have to be the Ta’ Pinu Shrine dedicated to the Blessed Virgin, which draws pilgrims from all over the world. This architecturally stunning Neo-Romanesque sanctuary is surrounded by stretches of Gozitan countryside in the sleepy village of Għarb. A more initimate place of worship is the Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel built in the Gothic style in the late 1800s. Perched atop a hill in Mgarr, this chapel commands spectactular views of the island’s harbour and the immediate surroundings.
OUR TIP: Handling wedding arrangements from afar can prove to be somewhat complicated, which is were a local wedding planner, who knows the best venues, florists, and caterers on the island, can give you a helping hand in putting everything nicely together. We can even put you in touch with our favourite wedding planner at your request.
