Are you ready to explore every inch of Gozo? Give in to adventure; trade in bus rides for paddle boarding; walking for cycling; and don’t just stop at swimming, dive right in to really get to know Gozo and discover her best-kept secrets. Some of the below activities are definitely for the faint-hearted, but the rewards of seizing the day and trying them out are too big to miss out on.
Abseiling and climbing are two fun activities which will give you your adrenaline fix as you enjoy spectacular sights from sheer heights. The rocky and craggy landscapes at Dwejra, Mġarr ix-Xini, Wied il-Għasri and Ta’ Ċenċ cliffs, make these spots some of the most well-suited to abseiling and climbing activities. Spring and autumn are our recommended seasons for a spot of crag crawling as in summer, especially in July, August and September, the weather tends to get too hot and humid for such activities. One word of advice would be not to attempt to conquer the cliffs and crags on your own, even if you have the climbing skills of Spiderman!
Boarding, kayaking and canoeing are fantastic ways to get to see the coastal sides of Gozo which are reserved for the more adventurous types. These water-based tours, which are guided by professional instructors who practically live in the seas surrounding the island, include stops at coves and secluded beaches which are not very accessible from land, allowing you to sample the very best of Gozo in a safe way. Some kayaking and canoeing tours will even take you as far out as Comino. If you’re looking for even more hair-raising thrills, you can always up the ante by jet skiing your way into the sunset or booking a wakeboarding tour.
Cycling might not be for everyone as Gozo’s very hilly landscape can make a cycling tour quite the feat. Experienced cyclists, however, will certainly appreciate routes such as the one which takes you from Żebbuġ to Xwejni, or conversely a pedal up the steep but rewarding road which leads from Xwejni to Żebbuġ, and so many others which take you past hidden chapels, into valleys, and through jungles of overgrown plants and trees. If you’re not an experienced cyclist but would still like to have a go at exploring the island on two wheels, an ebike and more even terrain is definitely the way to go.
Dive into Gozo’s underwater world where wrecks, caves and reefs make for the most wonderful playground for dazzling species. Don’t rule out the underwater world just because you do not have much previous experience! Licensed diving schools across the island offer services which cater to both beginners and professional divers, and you can always take a peek below the surface by snorkelling in Gozo’s crystal-clear waters. If you’re not sure where to start from and when’s the best time to visit for a diving holiday, why not check out our dive centre website and get recommended the best places to dive?
